Rigathi Gachagua Hosts Opposition Leaders, Blasts Ruto’s Government

In a significant political development on Sunday, impeached Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua convened a high-profile meeting with prominent opposition leaders from across the country. The gathering, which was both strategic and symbolic, saw the attendance of key figures including Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, NARC Kenya’s Martha Karua, Democratic Action Party’s Eugene Wamalwa, former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i, Justin Muturi, Mithika Linturi, Cleophas Malala, and Richard Onyonka among others.

The meeting, which took place in Gachagua’s residence, Wamunyoro in Mount Kenya region, comes amid mounting public frustration over economic hardship, growing insecurity, and what many perceive as a betrayal of campaign promises by President William Ruto’s administration.

In one voice the opposition leaders launched a scathing critique of the Kenya Kwanza government, highlighting what they described as widespread corruption, increasing cases of extrajudicial killings, and a general decline in public service delivery. They accused the Ruto administration of incompetence and failing to listen to the cries of ordinary Kenyans who continue to struggle under the weight of high taxes and rising living costs.https://shorturl.at/2fypL

Rigathi Gachagua, who hosted the meeting, did not hold back in his criticism. In a passionate address, he accused President William Ruto of consistently lying to the Kenyan public and failing to honor the promises he made during the 2022 campaign period.

“We will make big sacrifices for this country beyond personal goals and ambitions for the sake of our children. We have spoken in one relentless voice and commitment. Our country must prosper with a great promise to clean our country from the dealers,” Gachagua declared.

He went on to warn President Ruto against continued disrespect toward former President Uhuru Kenyatta, stating that if the trend persists, the President will not be welcome in the Mount Kenya region. “How can a nation so promising like the Kenya we have be frustrated through callousness and carelessness of outdated imperialism? How can we have leaders so deafly fail to listen to the cries and economic pains crushing over 50 million of us who pay taxes faithfully, work hard to put food on our tables? Yet poor service delivery to the common mwananchi is the order of the day?” Gachagua posed.

One of the most notable moments of the event was the formal declaration by former Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i of his intention to run for the presidency in 2027. Matiang’i, widely respected for his tenure as CS for Education and Interior, stated that the time had come for Kenya to embrace competent leadership that delivers results rather than empty rhetoric.

“Kenyans have lost trust in the current Government. Our people are tired of lies and theatrics. We are ready to restore that trust and deliver the broken promises,” Matiang’i said. His announcement has already caused ripples in the political landscape, with analysts noting that his entry into the race could significantly alter the dynamics of the 2027 elections.

Matiang’i’s candidacy is seen by many as a viable alternative to the current administration, given his track record in public service. As Education CS, he was credited with reforming the national examination system and cracking down on cheating cartels. At the Interior Ministry, he was known for his firm stance on law and order. His supporters argue that he brings a no-nonsense approach to leadership that is sorely needed in Kenya’s current political climate.

Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka also used the platform to articulate his vision for a new political phase in Kenya. He took a swipe at ODM leader Raila Odinga, criticizing his recent cooperation with President Ruto. “The Kenyan Gen Z did not die for Raila to join hands with President William Ruto. This alliance must be about the people, not political expediency,” Kalonzo stated.

He further challenged the Ruto administration to follow through on its threats and revoke former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s benefits if it believes he is violating the law by engaging in opposition politics. “Let them try. We dare them. The constitution protects Uhuru’s rights as a citizen,” Kalonzo said, drawing cheers from the audience.

Martha Karua, another vocal critic of the Ruto government, reiterated her stance against human rights abuses under the current administration. She cited recent reports of extrajudicial killings and unlawful detentions as evidence of a worrying trend toward authoritarianism.

“We cannot allow our country to slide back into a police state. Kenyans must stand up and demand justice, fairness, and democratic governance. It is time to unite and remove President Ruto from power in 2027,” Karua said.

The presence of figures such as Cleophas Malala and Mithika Linturi, who have at various times aligned with the ruling coalition, added a layer of intrigue to the meeting. Their attendance suggests that dissatisfaction with the Ruto administration may be brewing even within the Kenya Kwanza ranks. Cleophas Malala, former UDA SG dropped shocking details stating that President William Ruto was the force behind Rigathi Gachagua’s impeachment for standing with the Gen Z during the 2024 Finance Bill protests. Malala in his statement also linked the Kenya Kwanza government with the murder of Kasipul MP Charles Ong’ondo Were, critisizing Raila Odinga’s association with William Ruto.

Analysts have described the gathering as a potential turning point in Kenyan politics. With Fred Matiang’i’s presidential ambitions now public and the opposition seemingly uniting under a shared agenda, the 2027 general election could see the emergence of a powerful coalition capable of challenging Ruto’s government.

“This meeting was not just a political statement. It was a show of strength and unity among leaders who believe Kenya is headed in the wrong direction,” said political analyst Mercy Nyambura. “If they can maintain this momentum and avoid internal divisions, they pose a serious threat to Ruto’s re-election chances.”

As the political temperatures begin to rise ahead of the 2027 polls, all eyes will be on how the Ruto administration responds to this growing opposition movement. With economic pressures mounting and public dissatisfaction on the rise, the next two years will be crucial in shaping the country’s future.

For now, the opposition’s message is clear: Kenya deserves better, and they are ready to offer an alternative path forward.https://touchdigitalnews.com/president-ruto-set-to-begin-mt-kenya-region-tour/
